Prime minister Manmohan Singh, a well known academician in the field of economics, was born on 26th Sept. 1932, in the Punjab province of undivided India. After his early studies from Punjab University, he studied Economics at Cambridge University in 1957. He followed this with a D.Phil. Degree from Oxford University in 1964.
After several years of academic career at Punjab Univ. and Delhi School of Economics, in 1971, he was appointed as Economic Advisor to the ministry of Commerce. In 1972, he was made chief economic advisor to the ministry of Finance. Later on he held various key positions and has been termed as a mastermind behind the modern Indian Economic policies.
Dr. Singh has been a member of Rajya Sabha since 1991, where he has been the leader of opposition between 1998-2004.
Since 2004, he is the Prime minister of India. Though, he has been criticized by some of the leaders in opposition as a weak prime minister, yet, been able to complete a full five year term in office. He was also a major player in getting the nuclear energy deal through USA, despite of serious opposition within the UPA's.
Dr. Singh is rightly acclaimed as a thinker and a scholar. He is well regarded for his diligence and academic approach to his job.
UPA won the elections and perfromed better than what was predicted through the opinion and exit polls. He has been re-elected as the Prime Minister of the country by the elected members of the UPA.
