Lalu Prasad Yadav is a popular political leader from Bihar. He was born on June 11, 1947 in Phulwaria (District Gopalganj) Bihar in a poor peasant family. He married Rabri Devi on June 1, 1973 and they have 9 children (2 sons & 7 daughters). He was involved in politics during his student life at the Patna University. At the age of 29, he became the Member of Parliament of the 6th Lok Sabha on a Janata Party ticket and became one of the youngest members of Indian Parliament. He became a mass force in Bihar state of politics and elected as a chief minister after the Indian general elections 1989. He remained the Chief Minister of Bihar from 1990 to 1997. In 1996, he was accused in Rs. 950 crores Fodder scam on corruption charges in Bihar which compelled him to resign from the post of chief minister, but, he pushed his wife Rabri Devi as his successor.
In 1997, Lalu Prasad Yadav launched his party named, Rashtriya Janata Dal after the split from the Janata Dal. Currently he is the president of Rashtriya Janata Dal and holds a post of Union minister of Railways in the present government (UPA) at the centre.
He was a member of parliament from Chapra constituency in the 14th Lok Sabha. He is a popular figure for his leadership and mass appeal. Under his leadership, his ministry(Railway) made a huge profit of Rs. 25,000 crore. He is made as an icon of cultural popularity, many books are written on him and regular face in the entertainment industry.
He won the 2009 General Elections from Saran and lost from Patliputra constituency.
