Chennai Central is one of the important constituencies of Tamilnadu state due to the reason that DMK leader & Union Cabinet Minister, Dayanidhi Maran contested from here and won the seat. He was the sitting MP from this seat in 2004 general election and in 2009 general election, his main fight was with Mogamed Ali Jinnah S.M.K. of ADMK and in total there were 37 candidates in the fray.
